Counseling Session

In-line with Know Your Status' goal of providing simple, accessible HIV testing to college students, KYS counselors use an abbreviated pre-test counseling session, lasting between 3 and 7 minutes. Issues covered in a typical counseling session include a discussion of how HIV is transmitted and how one can protect oneself from infection. Other topics are what type of risky behavior you might have participated in in the past, exploring why you are seeking an HIV test that day, and determining if you are emotionally stable enough to handle a positive result. All conversations taking place in a counseling session are completely confidential, and counselors have been certified in appropriate confidentiality training modules, as well as prepared to conduct HIV testing sessions in accordance with North Carolina state laws.
